Internet censorship is a common tool used in the 21st century to regulate and suppress access to certain content on the internet. While censorship is not bad when used moderately, it can be detrimental when used excessively.<\/p>\n<p><b>Some common roles of censorship are;<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blocking harmful content like child pornography, fake news, and harmful or traumatic information.<\/li>\n<li>Blocking malicious software such as cyberwarfare tools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notably, the internet is free and no one owns it. Ergo, any organization or government can enforce its policies pertaining to its usage. In the Web2 era, there is much information available on the internet and moderate censorship is pivotal to protect users.<\/p>\n<p>Notwithstanding, governments that wish to spread or block certain information can suppress information available to their citizens. Most<br \/>\nregulations stipulated in this law never took effect due to trade issues. Many<br \/>\ntech giants operate in Russia &#8211; at least before the war in Ukraine and<br \/>\nenforcing such regulations may force such firms to exit the market.<\/p>\n<p>Now that sanctions on the Russian economy have<br \/>\nled to the departure of biggest tech giants from Russia, Putin\u2019s regime is<br \/>\nexpected to enforce tougher censorship measures. After all, the law is already<br \/>\nin place.<\/p>\n<p>Since the war began, Russia has been marred with<br \/>\nseveral protests in various parts of the country. In that regard, censorship<br \/>\nhas reached new heights in the quest to prevent the public from accessing<br \/>\ninformation about the war.<\/p>\n<p>Through censorship, the government can control<br \/>\nwhat the public reads and watches. Ergo, the government has a perfect<br \/>\nopportunity to spread propaganda about the war. In case you are wondering,<br \/>\npropaganda is crucial in times of war to;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Convince the public why the invasion was<br \/>\nnecessary.<\/li>\n<li>Prevent civil unrest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With Russia isolated from the open internet,<br \/>\nit is impossible for Russians to freely express their views over the internet.<br \/>\nPresident Putin has blocked several social media apps as part of its ongoing<br \/>\ncrackdown on platforms spearheading \u201cmisinformation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook was the first social media platform<br \/>\nto be axed from Russia. The regime then proceeded to block Instagram and partly<br \/>\nblock Twitter. It is just a matter of time before YouTube, TikTok, and other<br \/>\nsocial networking platforms are removed.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the Chinese government censors its<br \/>\ninternet, the country has a vibrant domestic tech industry.
